Diabetes and Traditional Medicine : Effect of Several Traditional Drugs on the Plasma Glucose Levels in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract
Background :
@EN Although many diabetic patients in Korea are currently using a variety of traditional herb drugs, it is not established whether these drugs are effective in lowering blood glucose levels. This study was undertaken to find out whether there is
an
effective hypoglycemic agent among these drugs.
@ES Methods :
@EN Several traditional drugs were given to the rats made diabetic by streptozotocin. Plasma glucose and free fatty acid (FFA) levels were measured before and 1, 2, 3 hours after the administration of drugs.
@ES Results :
@EN Plasma gluccse and FFA levels decreased significantly after the administration of Dalgaebi(19.4¡¾1.8 to 12.2¡¾2.5mmol/1, 715¡¾95 to 245¡¾60mmol/1, respectively, P<0.05 each). Other drugs did not have hypoglycemic effect.
@ES Conclusion :
@EN Dalgaebi acutely lowered plasma glucose and FFA levels in streptozotocin-induced diabeitc rats Future studies are warranted to test the possible clinical usefulness of this drug.
